For French Bulldog breeders, one of the most important conversations to have with your veterinarian before the expected due date is how progesterone testing will be used to help determine the timing of delivery.

French Bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, and planned C-sections are recommended because natural delivery can carry significant risks for both the mother and her puppies. But scheduling a C-section isn’t simply about counting days on a calendar. Timing matters.

Why Progesterone Testing Is So Important

Progesterone is a hormone that rises and falls throughout pregnancy. Near the end of pregnancy, progesterone drops sharply as the body prepares for labor.

Too Early vs. Too Late

Too early: Puppies may not be sufficiently mature, increasing the risk of neonatal complications.

Too late: Waiting too long can increase the risk of fetal distress, difficult labor, emergency C-section, or complications for the mother.

This is why progesterone results should never be interpreted in isolation. Your veterinarian will consider the progesterone trend along with the breeding/ovulation history, gestational timing, clinical signs, imaging, fetal development, and the health of the dam.

French Bulldogs Need Special Planning
